Name Servers
To point a domain name at Chameleon's hosting environment you need to go to your domain name provider and change either the Name Servers or an A record.
Chameleon Name Servers:-
ns1.chameleonhosting.co.uk
ns2.chameleonhosting.co.uk
To point the domain name using an A record we need to firstly provide you with the A record IP address.
Name Servers
Every domain has domain name servers.Domain Name Servers (DNS) are the Internet's equivalent of a phone book. They maintain a directory of domain names and translate them to Internet Protocol (IP) addresses.
This is necessary because, although domain names are easy for people to remember, computers or machines, access websites based on IP addresses.
Chameleon Name Servers:-
ns1.chameleonhosting.co.uk
ns2.chameleonhosting.co.uk
This means if these are used there are two ways to locate the domain name server for speed and reliability. When a computer, tablet or phone goes to a website it asks the router where is it?
The router then will ask the question and remember this for 24 hours to 48 hours.
Next time the computer, tablet or phone visits the same site it will already know in the 24 hour to 48 hour period and go to it without asking. This is known as TTL - time to live.
If we move a website today depending upon the situation of the router - whether is is remembering or not some people will see an old site and new visitors who have never visited will see the new site.It is important to that there are varied situations that can exist.
Situation 1:-
ns1.chameleonhosting.co.uk
ns2.chameleonhosting.co.uk
We hold the DNS and:-
1. point email hosting at our servers
2. point the website hosting at our servers
Situation 2:-
ns1.chameleonhosting.co.uk
ns2.chameleonhosting.co.uk
We hold the DNS and:-
1. point email hosting at our another provider of email services like Office 365 or Google Mail
2. point the website hosting at our servers
Situation 3:-
ns1.chameleonhosting.co.uk
ns2.chameleonhosting.co.uk
We hold the DNS and:-
1. point email hosting at our servers
2. point the website hosting at another provider of hosting
Situation 4:-
ns1.chameleonhosting.co.uk
ns2.chameleonhosting.co.uk
We hold the DNS and:-
1. point email hosting at our another provider of email services like Office 365 or Google Mail
2. point the website hosting at another provider of hosting
This means that just because the domain name servers are pointing at us we are only controlling the location of services - not always hosting the website and email.
